South Calumet District Streetscape and Gateway

Chesterton, Indiana

The DLZ Landscape Architecture & Planning Group was hired to plan and design a distinguishable and appealing south gateway into the Chesterton community. DLZ facilitated community stakeholder input and provided Conceptual Design alternatives which included streetscape treatment, appropriately scaled gateway and focal elements, sculpture/art garden, rain garden and native plantings.

Community context was taken into consideration, recognizing three important influences; arts-focused downtown, prevalence of dune ecosystems, and the region’s industrial heritage. Color-rendered plans and computer-aided 3D model animations were provided to clarify the design solution during public input and comment sessions.

The recommended Conceptual Design was approved by the public and Chesterton Redevelopment Commission. DLZ was retained to further develop design plans and construction documents. The final design featured custom large-scale focal elements at SR 49 and complimentary gateway features at the entrance of the South Calumet District.
