Jason Hargrove Transit Center

DLZ performed architecture and engineering design services associated with the new Jason Hargrove Transit Center developed at the former State Fairgrounds in Detroit. The design intent was to complete an adaptive reuse of the Dairy Cattle Building, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The project incorporated an interactive display to preserve the history and memory of the former State Fairgrounds, which are an important part of the City’s history. The project will be a main bus transfer center used by both DDOT and SMART.

As part of this project, DLZ performed Facility Condition Assessments for three existing historic buildings at the former State Fairgrounds to determine feasibility of adaptive reuse and extent of capital improvement projects required, civil/site engineering, storm sewer design, water main and sanitary sewer design for the construction of the new 54,000 square foot transit center building and a new park on a 7-acre site. DLZ also performed survey, environmental, and material testing services, The design included bus routes, driveways, two new parking areas and landscaping. The project also includes development of a new urban park and preservation of the historic “Portico.”
