FBI Outdoor Recreation Area
DLZ was selected by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) to renovate 33 existing, 25-year-old restrooms, in 11 buildings on the FBI’s Clarksburg, West Virginia campus. The renovation work included architecture, structural, plumbing, electrical, mechanical, fire alarm, fire protection, and interior design. DLZ analyzed and addressed the existing plumbing, mechanical, fire protection and electrical systems as well. DLZ also developed construction documents (plans and specifications) and a construction cost estimate.
A survey of the existing site was conducted to verify the condition drawings. After a site visit, DLZ verified the programmatic needs to include interior space requirements, intended space use and capacity, and accessibility requirements. DLZ developed the design and construction documents and rough order of magnitude cost estimate.
The renovated restrooms were designed to be cost efficient and functional, and provided for a safe work environment by complying with safety codes, criteria, and safety standards. The restrooms materials, equipment, and finishes were selected for durability based on a minimum expected useful life of 25 years. Interior construction and finishes were selected such that they would not be damaged by cleaning and maintenance operations and all equipment was designed and located to be easily accessible for service and maintenance by FBI maintenance personnel.
DLZ’s designs consisted of time-proven technologies, and features, and utilized materials which have been thoroughly tested and proven to work. A critical factor to the project was that work was planned and designed in a manner to minimize disruption to the FBI’s ongoing use of existing facilities during the construction phase, and to avoid any facility shutdowns. Additionally, DLZ designed the restrooms to be ADA compliant, which was fundamental to the design for each of the restrooms.
