I-264 Bridge Design in Jefferson County, Kentucky
DLZ led the I-264 bridge design in Jefferson County, a project by Kentucky Transportation Cabinet District 5. The bridge showed major deterioration, including failed joints and poor pier cap and column areas. District staff identified this bridge as the highest priority for use of interstate bridge maintenance funds.
I-264, known as Shawnee Parkway, forms a partial loop around Louisville. The project consisted of structural design of a new bridge for the I-264 northbound ramp to I-64 westbound. Although the ramp was reconstructed, the primary focus was the bridge replacement. During ramp construction, traffic had to maintained. In addition, DLZ was tasked with minimizing impacts to the interstate roadways underneath the ramp while construction was underway. We developed a detailed maintenance of traffic plan for the I-264 bridge design to meet both goals.
We initially assisted another firm in the development of this project. When the prime firm failed to meet their obligations, we worked with the District to assume the contract and complete the I-264 bridge design. Our team completed previous projects for KYTC, so they knew our abilities and work ethic.
DLZ has offices in Louisville and Lexington, making us well-positioned for this project. Our Kentucky team leads a range of transportation projects, including pavement rehabilitation and roadway and bridge design of all sizes.
