St. Clement Church Dome Restoration

The circa 1930 dome located within the center of the church is currently suffering structural deterioration. DLZ teamed up with ViaTechnik to provide an existing condition capture solution of the St. Clement Church dome to the Board of the Church. The current conditions capture was to include the interior surface of the dome, the exterior surface of the dome, and the interstitial space between the interior and exterior surfaces where most of the structural supports reside.

A significant safety concern and procedural difficulty was the access to the interstitial space, which was more than 80 feet above grade, with exterior access through a small dome perimeter window opening with an 18-inch walkway and ladder over the plaster and lath surface of the interstitial dome area. DLZ worked closely with our safety team and the church maintenance faculty to ensure safe access for the field crew. The DLZ team also fabricated special scan targets to mount in difficult areas to tie the three spaces together.

DLZ was able to safely and accurately capture the data and provide a 3D point cloud for our client to prepare a model of the existing conditions for structural evaluation and restoration of the St. Clement Church dome.

The DLZ team is eager to design solutions that meet your infrastructure needs. If you have any questions about the work we do, check out our Services page. We also highlight our diverse experience in our Project profiles. Additionally, feel free to contact us.
