Indianapolis Zoo ADA Assessment

The Indianapolis Zoo contracted with DLZ to conduct an assessment of exhibitions, exhibits, paths of travel, and amenities for compliance with the 2010 ADA Standards for Accessible Design. As the Indianapolis Zoological Society, Inc. is a non-profit Title III entity, the assessment was done under the requirements of 28 CFR Part 36, Public Accommodations and Commercial Facilities.

DLZ coordinated with the Zoo’s Vice President of Infrastructure and Construction and other staff to identify and access the public areas of the Zoo to be evaluated. The evaluation included interior and exterior public features such as parking, curb ramps and sidewalks, passenger loading zones, ramps, stairways, drinking fountains, restrooms, doors, rooms, assembly areas, ticketing and service counters, site furnishings, playgrounds, viewing areas, amusement rides, and signage. Photographs were taken of all elements.

Findings were documented in a written synopsis that included, by facility, a listing of non-compliant features and options for corrective actions when modified. Items that warranted immediate attention due to either safety concerns or significant barriers to persons with disabilities were prioritized for corrective action.
