Lansing Community College TLC Building Renovation

DLZ provided Professional Design Services to renovate the existing Lansing Community College (LCC) Abel B. Sykes, Jr. Technical Learning Center (TLC) Building, approximately 140,000 sq. ft. The project scope includes redefining the function and space of the existing Library converting it into a Student Success Center, create spaces that enhance student learning, restructure work space within TLC to promote greater efficiencies, and provide better access and appeal to the building entrances.

DLZ assisted LCC in preparing a new business model/facility program for how a 20th century library should both operate, be staffed, and serve students. This experiential program approach helped shape the initial design concept and ultimately the entire project to completion. Every component within the building was custom designed to seamlessly fit together to create fully immersive experience for students and staff using the space. This immersive design approach utilized custom lighting, technology, furnishings, and aesthetics to guide visitors through the experiential inner-workings of the building.

College stakeholders included but were not limited to students, faculty members, department chairs, deans, and administrators. The project required renovating the first through fourth floors and was implemented as a hybrid Integrated Project Delivery (IPD) in coordination with Granger Construction. This process’ primary focus is to optimize project results, increase value to the owner, reduce waste, and maximize efficiency through all phases of design, fabrication, and construction.
