Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital, Chicago

DLZ provided material testing and surveying services for the construction of the 24-story Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital.  DLZ performed materials testing services for the Owner’s representative, The Rise Group. Also, performed surveying services for the general contractor, Mortenson/Power Construction, on the project.

We performed a boundary survey, construction control and layout surveys, and settlement monitoring surveys for the project. In addition to those, DLZ also completed several high-definition laser scan surveys (HDS).  One HDS assignment determined if two life-size, balsa wood humpback whales, that the Chicago Field Museum donated to the Children’s hospital, would fit within the proposed structure. If they in fact did fit, the assignment would help determine the logistics of bringing them into the structure. This was essential, since, by the time of the donation, the superstructure construction was well underway.

In addition, HDS was also used on the project to perform an as-built survey of the massive elevator core for plumb and comparison to the design model for structural location prior to steel erection, and for MEP coordination and conflict resolution between the various MEP systems and contractors. The project was featured in Engineering News-Record noting the comparison between scanned as-built MEP features and the intended design model.
