Materials Testing

DLZ’s capabilities include a range of materials testing and analysis services. By combining state-of-the-art facilities and equipment with the highest level of technical ability, we have earned a reputation for excellence in soils and materials laboratory testing. DLZ’s accredited materials testing laboratory is equipped to perform general index, consolidation, permeability, and shear strength tests on both soil and rock samples. DLZ also provides in-place density testing of soils and bituminous pavements for compaction. Additionally, DLZ provides cured-in-place pipe (CIPP) plastics testing which includes conditioning (ASTM D618), flexural (ASTM D790), physical dimensions (ASTM D5947 – Method C), and tensile (ASTM D638).

DLZ’s materials testing services include four laboratories throughout the Midwest, including Columbus, Ohio; Burns Harbor, Indiana, Bridgeville, Pennsylvania and Melvindale, Michigan. All four of our laboratories perform testing of soils, aggregates, rock, asphalt, concrete and plastics. Our construction materials laboratories feature state-of-the-art facilities designed for high volume testing as well as a mobile laboratory that can be deployed to test materials on-site.

Our facilities are validated by the USACE-ERDC in accordance with EM 1110-1-261, accredited by the AASHTO Accreditation Program (AAP) through inspections by the AASHTO Materials Reference Laboratory (AMRL) and Cement and Concrete Reference Laboratory (CCRL), and accredited by the American Association for Laboratory Accreditation (A2LA) for the testing of plastics.

All materials testing is accomplished under the direction of a Professional Engineer or Professional Certified Geologist, and performed by only trained and qualified personnel to provide the most reliable and accurate results.

The laboratory personnel dedicate substantial time to certification, training, and education by obtaining certifications from the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET), the American Concrete Institute (ACI), Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), the Asphalt Institute (AI), the International Code Council (ICC), Ohio Aggregates and Industrial Minerals Association (OAIMA), and other local, state, and national agencies. They also participate in technical and professional societies including ASCE, ASTM, A2LA, ACI, and other local, state, and national groups. The DLZ team provides a full range of in-situ and laboratory analytical services for construction materials testing, including testing of:

  • Soil
  • Aggregate
  • Rock
  • Concrete
  • Asphalt Concrete
  • Plastic
  • Sprayed Fire-Resistive Materials (SFRM)
