Process
The scope of services includes a topographic survey with ROW along the corridor, pavement marking plans, the evaluation and redesign of existing ADA ramps, the addition of APS push button and posts, improvements to vehicle detection, and the replacement of portions of existing ITS equipment, such as PTZ cameras, which are part of the DuDOT Central Signal System.
DLZ prepared construction documents for the installation of a pedestrian-actuated traffic signal at the Great Western Trail (GWT) crossing of County Farm Road (CFR) in Winfield, Illinois and interconnect of the new crossing to the CFR signal system from St. Charles Road to IL Route 64 (North Avenue). The improvement addresses a long-discussed mobility and safety need at the existing unsignalized trail crossing where pedestrians and bicyclists currently cross four lanes of traffic with a posted speed limit of 45 mph. The pedestrian-actuated signal will enhance safety for trail users and motorists.
The project includes pedestrian lighting, mast arm-mounted traffic signals, APS push buttons with walk/don’t walk indications for trail users, a pan-tilt-zoom (PTZ) camera, and connection to the DuDOT and IDOT centralized signal systems. Traffic signal operations will be coordinated with the nearby signals at St. Charles Road and IL Route 64 and will only stop motorists when trail users actuate the push buttons to request a walk indication.
DLZ’s Survey team used terrestrial and drone LiDAR scanning to complete the topographic survey of the CFR corridor, minimizing field time while providing detailed corridor data that DuDOT can use for future projects. Design is nearly complete and construction is expected to be completed in late 2026.
