Ecological Services

Infrastructure projects and natural systems share the same landscape. Navigating that overlap requires more than a checklist. Ecological services are often the critical path item that determines whether a project can move forward, on what timeline, and under what conditions. DLZ brings the field expertise, regulatory knowledge, and agency relationships to identify ecological constraints early, minimize impacts where possible, and secure the permits and approvals that keep projects advancing responsibly.

Our ecological team works across the full range of aquatic resources, terrestrial habitats, and species concerns — from wetland delineations and stream assessments to threatened and endangered species surveys. With experience across multiple Corps of Engineers districts and familiarity with state-specific requirements in Indiana, Ohio, Michigan, and beyond, we bring regional depth that makes a real difference in how smoothly the regulatory process goes.

Featured Capabilities

Ecological surveys and assessments

Wetlands & Streams

Accurate wetland and stream identification is the foundation of  responsible project planning. Our team performs jurisdictional wetland delineations, ordinary high water mark identification, and wetland report preparation in accordance with U.S. Army Corps of Engineers requirements and applicable regional supplements — with district experience spanning Detroit, Chicago, Louisville, Huntington, and Buffalo. We also provide stream and wetland mitigation planning, design, and monitoring for projects requiring compensatory mitigation.

Ecological permitting

Permitting

Securing the right permits at the right time is essential to keeping projects on schedule. DLZ guides clients through Clean Water Act Section 401 and 404 permitting processes, as well as state and local agency permitting requirements. And we coordinate with regulatory agencies to support timely approvals and minimize project risk.

Ecological Surveys & Assessments

Our teams apply a range of state and regionally recognized protocols including ORAM, MiRAM, MiSQT, VIBI-FQ, and QHEI/HHEI assessments, alongside plant, fish, macroinvertebrate, and water quality surveys — providing the documented baseline data that regulators and project teams need to evaluate impacts and plan mitigation.

Ecological threatened and endangered species

Threatened & Endangered Species

Projects in sensitive habitats require careful attention to protected species and their habitats. DLZ conducts threatened and endangered species surveys, bat habitat screenings and clearances, and mussel reconnaissance surveys, with staff trained to state and federal bat survey protocols and experienced in USFWS bridge and structure assessments. Our team coordinates Section 7 ESA compliance using USFWS IPaC tool and maintains active relationships with state resource agencies across the Midwest.

NEPA Compliance

Environmental review under NEPA requires field verification, alternatives analysis, and coordination with multiple federal and state agencies. Our ecological staff supports NEPA compliance for transportation, infrastructure, and development projects — conducting site visits, preparing environmental documentation, and coordinating with USACE, DOT, FAA, and other reviewing agencies to support efficient, defensible project approvals.
