Federal Facility Design

Federal facilities operate under a different set of rules — and DLZ knows them. Our site development team designs for federal buildings, USPS facilities, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers projects, FBI facilities, and U.S. Armed Forces sites. For many of these projects, resiliency and security are critical considerations built into the project constraints and evaluation criteria from day one.

Federal standards have to be incorporated throughout the project lifecycle, from initial concept design through construction documents, and DLZ brings that discipline to every phase. Because we routinely take these projects from concept through construction, we’re able to balance creativity, functionality, client vision, and constructability while creating welcoming, functional, and sustainable facilities — integrating stormwater management and green infrastructure solutions that meet regulatory requirements and support sustainability goals.

Site Selection

DLZ conducts comprehensive feasibility studies evaluating roadway access, existing utility capacity, drainage constraints, zoning requirements, and site geometry, to support operations today and expansion down the road. These studies give federal clients the documentation they need to justify site decisions to their own review and approval processes.

Design & Construction Documents

We develop coordinated site/civil plans, including grading design, stormwater management systems, utility layouts, landscape plantings, and permitting documents, all in accordance with local, state, and federal standards. We track the specific design criteria that apply to each agency and facility type, so plans move through federal review processes without unnecessary delays.

Vehicular & Pedestrian Circulation

DLZ designs internal circulation systems including parking layout, turning movements, ADA-compliant pedestrian routes, pick-up and drop-off areas, and clear separation of public, staff, and service traffic. Circulation plans account for the heightened security posture common to federal sites, including designated screening and inspection points where required.

Service Areas & Facilities

We plan and design service yards, delivery zones, utility and maintenance areas, fleet circulation, garages, and fueling infrastructure, keeping operational areas separated from public access. These areas are sized and configured to support each facility’s specific operational tempo, from routine deliveries to specialized federal fleet and equipment needs.

Safety & Security

DLZ designs perimeter controls and protective elements, including fencing, gates, crash-rated bollards, blast distances, and access control features, that enhance safety while maintaining accessibility. We design these elements to meet applicable federal security criteria while keeping the site functional and approachable for authorized staff and visitors.
