Site Investigations and Remediation

Contaminated sites don’t have to stay that way. Whether the challenge is a legacy industrial property, an active facility with a release, or a brownfield targeted for redevelopment, understanding what’s in the ground — and what to do about it — requires both technical rigor and regulatory savvy. DLZ helps clients identify, assess, and manage environmental contamination with the data-driven insight needed to reduce risk, support informed decisions, and move sites toward closure or productive reuse.

Our approach integrates federal and state regulatory expertise, including CERCLA and state-specific requirements, with end-to-end project delivery from initial evaluation through remediation and long-term monitoring. We act as a liaison between clients and regulatory agencies, streamlining approvals and keeping projects on track — balancing environmental responsibility with the practical realities of project timelines and budgets.

Featured Capabilities

Environmental site investigation and characterization

Site Investigation & Characterization

Sound remediation starts with a thorough understanding of site conditions. Our teams conduct pre-investigation evaluations to identify potential concerns and risks, followed by targeted sample collection and monitoring across soil, groundwater, and other affected media. Exposure pathway assessments translate that data into a clear picture of risk — and a defensible foundation for remedial decision-making.

Risk Assessment & Regulatory Support

Environmental decisions carry real consequences for human health, project timelines, and long-term liability. We evaluate site-specific risk against applicable federal and state regulatory criteria, provide compliance guidance, and coordinate directly with agencies and stakeholders to support approvals and keep projects moving through the regulatory process.

Environmental remedial design

Remedial Design & Implementation

Effective remediation requires the right strategy for the specific conditions of each site. We develop corrective action plans and remedial designs tailored to site conditions, conduct pilot testing and technology selection, and implement proven approaches including soil vapor extraction, multi-phase extraction, engineered barriers, vapor mitigations systems, in-situ chemical oxidation, air sparge, and in situ bioremediation to name a few — selecting the method that best balances performance, cost, and timeline.

Environmental system design

System Design, Construction & Operations

Getting a remediation system built and running correctly is as important as the design itself. We provide system specifications and construction-phase support, manage permitting and startup, and oversee long-term operation and maintenance. And we monitor system performance throughout to confirm effectiveness and regulatory compliance.

Environmental site closure

Site Closure & Long-Term Monitoring

The goal of every remediation project is closure. We develop strategies to achieve “no further action” status or site closure under applicable regulations, providing progress reporting, verification sampling, and long-term monitoring programs that confirm remediation success and protect human health and the environment over time.

Environmental Demolition

Underground Storage Tanks

DLZ offers turn-key management services for the life cycle of underground storage tank (UST) systems. We assist our clients with the design of new UST systems, construction management, and developing specifications for the decommissioning of existing systems that no longer comply with federal and state requirements. We offer a full range of consulting services for leaking UST sites, including multi-media site investigations, risk assessment, Risk-Based Corrective Action (RBCA), remediation system design and construction management, regulatory reporting, and providing assistance with state reimbursement funds.
