Overview
DLZ was selected by the MDOT for the design and preparation of construction documents initially for the rehabilitation of six miles of six-lane freeway, from Ford Road to Six Mile Road, including interchanges at Ford Road and Ann Arbor Road in the cities of Canton, Plymouth, and Livonia. The project was then changed to a complete reconstruction with the same limits.

Process
The project included full right-of-way and roadway design survey, geometric design and improvements, stabilization design for eroded banks of the Middle Rouge River adjacent to I-275, complex maintenance of traffic plans, extensive pavement evaluation, crash assessment, culvert evaluation (visual and hydraulic assessment), culvert and sewer replacements, concrete barrier, guardrail and cable barrier design, freeway signing replacement and traffic signal modernization design.
The project also included geometric assessments to evaluate opportunity to make required improvements, such as vertical clearance improvements, extensive coordination with MDOT staff to assess the impacts of pavement widening and its impacts on water quality and quantity to satisfy EGLE’s MS4 requirements. DLZ designed one bridge and a retaining wall as well as incorporated the plans for the rehabilitation of 28 bridges designed by MDOT staff.
DLZ also prepared exhibits and assisted MDOT staff for the presentation at the project’s public informational meeting. This project was part of an overall 24-mile-long project done by a combination of MDOT and consultants. DLZ led the coordination for the overall project.
“Working with the DLZ team on the I-275 reconstruction project was an excellent experience. The team demonstrated clear communication, exceptional professionalism, and the ability to manage complex tasks with ease. Their attention to detail ensured both projects were completed on time and met MDOT standards.”
