Process
The project was split into three phases and the purpose of the projects are to introduce traffic calming via “road diet”, construct the first three portions of the Interurban Trail, and other infrastructure improvements. DLZ’s scope includes the development of a scoping report, roadway design plans for reducing from 6-lanes to 4-lanes, placing new 8-inch curbs, construction of a grass buffer and a new 10’ HMA trail (Interurban Trail).
Other improvements include access management across the entire corridor, retaining walls, reconfiguring the East Street intersection with Madison Avenue, signal upgrades, landscape design, storm design, and sidewalk/bus stop improvements. The rehabilitation of the Madison Avenue bridges over Morris Street, Highland Creek, and Pleasant Run are also included as part of this project. Plans for these projects are developed in accordance with the INDOT Standard Specifications and DPW Design Standards.
DLZ conducted field investigations to determine the extent of patching and full-depth replacement of the existing concrete pavement, condition of existing drainage structures, condition of the current traffic signal equipment, location of fire hydrants for placement of blue raised pavement markers and new ADA compliant curb ramps. DLZ also coordinated with a Geotechnical Investigation firm to obtain FWD testing results, existing pavement cores, and subgrade information.
DLZ prepared final design plans, which included typical section sheets, details and plan sheets including paving limits, extents of full depth versus partial depth joint repairs, pavement marking, signing, and landscaping. DLZ also provided quantity summary tables and drainage structure data tables for this project.
