Overview

DLZ was retained by the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) to design the replacement of the I-94 bridge under French Road as part of Phase I of the I-94 Modernization Project. Working alongside a multidisciplinary team of 20 consultants in a collaborative, co-located office, DLZ supported a fast-track design effort for nine advance bridge projects. Construction of the French Road bridge was completed in 2019.

Process

The new two-span structure replaced the existing four-span bridge and features 42-inch-deep prestressed concrete modified bulb-tee beams, a 9-inch concrete deck, and concrete sidewalks. The bridge incorporates pile-supported, cast-in-place concrete abutments with stem walls exceeding 19 feet in height. The pile-supported pier features two arch-shaped openings and horizontal rustication, creating a distinctive architectural treatment.

Consistent with the aesthetic vision for the I-94 corridor through Detroit, the bridge incorporates unique concrete form liners on the abutments and pier, along with inclined fencing and light poles integrated into the bridge railings. These elements enhance the structure’s visual character while complementing other improvements throughout the corridor.

DLZ also prepared project-specific MDOT Special Provisions, FUSP checklists, cost estimates, and structural load ratings. Extensive utility coordination was required to address existing water and gas mains, MDOT ITS cabling and a camera tower, storm sewers, and City of Detroit electrical and street lighting infrastructure.

Supporting the broader I-94 Modernization effort, DLZ’s drilling team was retained by several geotechnical engineering firms to obtain foundation borings for multiple advance bridges, including the French Road structure.
