Process
The project consists of a new 12,570 SF New Construction Owned (NCO) facility on a 2.384 acre site that will support retail postal operations, approximately 413 post office boxes, and 22 delivery routes. The approximately $9,600,000 facility is being developed to expand USPS operational capacity and improve service delivery within the rapidly growing greater Indianapolis area market. Early project efforts included site selection support, due diligence investigations, boundary and topographic surveying, geotechnical coordination, and development of a comprehensive 30% design package.
The selected site presented several planning and design challenges, including floodplain considerations, utility and easement constraints, vehicle circulation requirements, and operational security needs. Working closely with USPS, DLZ led the architectural planning effort while coordinating civil, structural, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and site disciplines to develop an integrated facility design. Detailed analysis was performed for employee and customer circulation, delivery vehicle maneuvering, truck access, parking, stormwater management, fencing and access control systems, and utility infrastructure to ensure compliance with USPS design standards and local regulatory requirements.
Currently advanced through the 30% design phase, the Greenwood, Indiana Main Post Office reflects USPS’s long-term investment in modernizing postal infrastructure and improving operational efficiency. DLZ’s multidisciplinary approach has produced a facility design that balances functionality, security, customer service, and future adaptability while positioning the project for successful advancement into final design and construction.
