Waterfall Drive Riverwalk Extension, Elkhart, Indiana

Elkhart Board of Public Works selected DLZ to provide engineering and design services for the Waterfall Drive Riverwalk Extension project. Also, a part of the project were topographic survey, regulatory permitting, bid phase assistance, and construction administration services.

Nearly 400 lineal feet of degraded riverbank lined the Waterfall Drive from High Street to Elkhart Avenue. The Waterfall Drive Riverwalk Extension Project aimed to study the aesthetic treatment and restoration of the riverbank. DLZ’s Landscape Architecture Group developed conceptual-level alternatives for extending an existing segment of Riverwalk. The benefits of that included improved pedestrian circulation and accessibility compliance. Thus, all citizens could experience and enjoy the Elkhart River as one of the City’s prime amenities.

The design phase of the Project included capped sheet walls, sloped concrete walkway, decorative guardrails and handrails, riverbank stabilization, new storm sewer, and water main along Waterfall Drive, and streetscape enhancements consisting of new curb and sidewalk, decorative street lighting, landscape plantings, and irrigation. The Project also included coordination with a former manufactured gas plant that has an environmental restrictive covenant over the project area as part of IDEM’s Voluntary Remediation Program (VRP) Tier II Non-residential land use criteria.
