Overview
The Redevelopment Commission for the City of West Lafayette selected DLZ to provide complete site development, architecture, engineering, and construction administration services for a new West Lafayette Public Safety Center.
Process
DLZ also performed overall Building and Site Programming, investigation of the existing police Department Building systems and infrastructure, as well as asbestos inspection and sampling.
The existing 34,028 SF police station no longer met the need of the growing department and the community. Its systems and infrastructure had exceeded their useful life span, resulting in increased operation costs. Additionally, Fire Station No. 2, built in the 1960s, was undersized, outdated, and its location on Navajo forced the fire trucks to back into the station, creating safety hazards, and delaying response times.
The new center will be located on an approximate 2.5-acre parcel of land, which currently serves the police department and the east adjacent vacant parcel that served the former city hall.
Results
The entire building will be renovated and repurposed based on the new developed Program of Space and shall include an addition: the new Program reflects 77,804 SF with an attached 55,960 SF parking structure. The new facility will serve the operations of the police department (26,966 SF), the fire department (20,922 SF) with shared common space (19,741 SF) and public meeting rooms (10,175 SF). Site development includes access drives, four drive-through apparatus bays, parking, utility services, on-site stormwater management, and landscaping.
